Easter Exhibitions

We are delighted to announce details of two exhibitions over the Easter period, where Ashley is the featured artist. Great Atlantic Art in Falmouth are exhibiting Ashley's 'Porthleven ' series in its entirety, (excluding any previously sold pieces) and Modern Artist Gallery in Reading are showing 6 of his recent 'Penzance' series.

Exhibtion at 'Great Atlantic Art'
'Porthleven 12' & 'Porthleven 5'
Ashley works in series with paintings often feeding each other. He is very excited to be showing two important bodies of work simultanously.

Ashley comments 'In 1978 as a first year architecture student I saw a Peter Lanyon exhibition in Manchester which was instrumental in my decision to become a painter. My knowledge of contemporary painting was minimal but I sensed the power of the work and one artist's very personal vision of the world. His 1951 painting 'Porthleven' was always a favourite and it was inevitable that the town would become the focus of my first Cornish paintings.'

The exhibition at Great Atlantic Art, Falmouth runs until 28th April 2012.
For more information about the exhibition and for a further insight to the work exhibition see http://greatatlantic.webplus.net/temporary/ashley_hanson.html

Ashley returns to the Modern Artist Gallery, Reading where one of the prize winning paintings from the 'Canvas & Cream' competition, 'Penzance 4' can be seen. Talking about this series Ashleys says 'What always intrigued me about Penzance was the oddness and purity of the house-shape of the inner-harbour.  I found echoes of the shape and its ‘zigzagedness’ in the warehouses and harbour buildings and throughout the series I explored the tensions and relationships between them.'

The exhibition at Modern Artist Gallery, Reading is on until 25th April 2012. See link for further details http://www.modernartistsgallery.com/index.php

Hot News - Canvas & Cream Prizewinner!!!

'City of Glass 1'
'Penzance 4'

Yipee! I have just found out that I have been selected as one of the two Prizewinners for the Canvas & Cream competition in London.

The prize is a joint exhibition alongside Susan Eyre, 7th-22nd November this year. I got the news two minutes after getting my rejection letter from the John Moores competition and the upside is I can now show my entry 'City of Glass 2' in the exhibition at Canvas & Cream!  Thanks to everyone who supported me (voted!) and hope to see you all at the exhibition later this year. After our Painting Holiday, I've got lots of studio time ahead to make  more work in the 'City of Glass ' series for the exhibition. Can't wait to get in the studio. Watch this space for new images! Champagne is going in the fridge.........

Workshop Updates

Our ‘Working with the life Model’ workshop went off very well with a full house and a good mixture of students from absolute beginners to those with lots of experience.
It seems Ashley put all the students through their paces with a mixture of short and long poses, using a variety of drawing and painting tools. Thank-you to everyone who completed the feedback form, we received some lovely comments about the workshop and with such positive feedback, I am sure it is one we will do again.

Landscape at Honeycomb Studios
Colour in the Landscape Workshop
Also Ashley’s ‘Colour in the Landscape', 2 day workshop at Honeycomb Animation in Devon was a great success! The group focused on making the transition from observational drawing in the landscape, and exploring methods of abstracting the subject matter to create work in oils and acrylics, using colour, mark making and line.  The final critique proved quite fascinating, comparing the different approaches to the same subject matter. For more information on courses available at Honeycomb Animation see http://honeycombworkshops.blogspot.com/

'Canvas & Cream' Art Prize - Private View

Come Visit the New South London Art Hub - Show is on till 2nd April 2012

After 6 years of leaving this area amd moving down to Cornwall it was good to be back in my old stomping ground. Denise and I were lucky enough to escape from the children for a night (thanks to a very good friend) and thoroughly enjoyed the event. The turn out for the PV was very impressive and the place was alive and buzzing - at times bursting at the seams! Joanna Gore and her family have really done a good job with the venue offering art, workshops, culture, food and much more. We loved the gallery space and the work looked pretty good too! I had lots of interesting chats about my work and met up with lots of friends - old and new!

Thank-you to 'Canvas & Cream', it is definitely worth a visit and will no doubt build a great reputation for showing an eclectic mix of interesting art. By the way don't forget to vote for your favourite artist!!
